Crabitat Pools

Description

It's important to have fresh and salt water for your hermit crabs in the form of actual water, and not just a sponge. In fact, sponges are not needed at all, and can actually harm your crab. With all their surface area, they are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and can essentially poison your crab's water source. You don't need to have pools like mine, but you should have fresh and salt water where your largest crab can submerge at least up to the opening of his/her shell, and your smallest can have easy access in and out.

For more information on water for hermit crabs, see my journal for helpful links, or ask me directly. :)

These are the fresh and salt water pools in my crabitat. They are 2 liters each, and aerated. I made them from plastic food containers. The ramp is made from 3/4 of the lid, silicone glue meant for aquariums, pebbles, and shells. On the bottom, I have river rocks and a plastic plant with a suction cup on the bottom.

Not many of my crabs fully submerge, but I have counted 4 different ones that do it regularly. Poopy, Cat, Sticky, and an unnamed crab. I have also seen my E's and violas swimming, but I am not convinced it was by choice. Sometimes they fall in from the second story. =P
